For those in love with the marine life, there is no bigger dream than swimming next to its magnificent creatures. However, to fulfil that ambition, sometimes a life isn’t enough, but as it turns out some are more lucky than others!
This group of sea free divers have always dreamed of having a close encounter with a blue whale – the world’s largest giant! Recently their dream came true and they even caught the once-in-a-lifetime experience on camera, and the results are nothing short of amazing!
All experienced divers, Marianne Aventurier – a psychomotor therapist, and Alex Voyer and Alex Roubaud, both talented underwater photographers, have traveled all over the world to meet the elusive blue whales. But they have eventually come face to face with the gigantic creatures off coast of Sri Lanka.
“One of our wildest and most inaccessible dreams was to swim alongside the blue whale,” Marianne said. “And here [in Sri Lanka] we were lucky to find a huge group of sperm whales. They could be between one and 15 subjects divided into groups but quite close to each other.”
Lucky for them, the three divers did’t get just, but two encounters with these majestic creatures, during their trip. The group spent nearly 40 hours in the water for what they easily call a lifetime experience.
“Finally, among those 40 hours in the sea, we were able to meet the eyes of the blue whale twice. Forty hours for a few seconds of meeting, but it was worth it,” said Marriane. “I was planning my return to the boat when suddenly, I found myself nose to nose with her[blue whale]! She swam towards me. I shifted, seeking her eyes, not easy to find in such large animals! She is covered with remora, she is sublime.”
During their incredible diving trip, the group also got the chance to swim alongside a group of sperm whales, who found themselves pretty curious with the divers! “We were lucky to find a huge group of sperm whales,” the woman said. “Some slept, but most went a little deeper and one of them stopped to watch us for a few minutes.”
